Introduction The European community
has recently made the issue of immigration one of its main priorities and
is focusing on the many problems of the harmonisation of the different
inner immigration policies of its members.

The closing of the refugee camp of
Sangatte in the North of France by the end of 2002 testifies of the British
and French governments’ will to put an end to uncontrolled flux of immigrants
inside their respective borders.
Following the closing of ‘Sangatte’, some of the refugees who were desperately
waiting there to cross the Channel to reach England were given a temporary
visa enabling them to live in the promised island.
Most of the refugees first arrived
in London, like Nilebeg N’Ramjaec, 25 years old, and Tepas N’Serhipotjaec,
aged 19, who both fled from Kurdistan. Yet, they are not planning to stay
in the capital city of England. As a matter of fact, they are planning
to move in Bath and settle there permanently.
The Task
Your task will be to help one of them
prepare his journey to Bath and make everything ready for him to settle
there comfortably.
Nilebeg is a former cook in a traditional restaurant in Kurdistan. He is
hoping to find a job in Bath or Bristol, while living in a cheap accommodation
in the former city. Your task will then be to book him a train or coach
ticket to Bath, as soon as you have found him a job in Bristol and some
accommodation in Bath according to his wages.
As a student, Tepas, who managed to get a study loan from the British government
on his arrival to England, would like to go to the university of Bath.
Your task will then be to prepare his journey to the former Roman city,
after you have sorted out some accommodation for him there and help him
register at the university as an overseas student finding for him the appropriate
lectures according to his curriculum.
The Process
If
you chose to play Nilebeg’s part, you would:
have to find a job,
have to find some accommodation,
have to prepare your journey from London to Bath.

Conclusion
Your life as a refugee is now over. You have been
through all the administrative stages which should enable you to live and work
in England. You are now ready to settle in
Bath or anywhere in an English speaking country.
